An Athlete's Guide to Clarity of Mind

In such a fast-paced world with even faster-paced games, it’s easy to overlook the time we should be making in our schedule to take care of our mental headspace. We tend to forget how crucial a shift in perspective or mindset can be— but every now and then, we’re reminded how it can completely change the results of our efforts and enjoyment in our sport.

Muhammed Ali once said, “If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it — then I can achieve it.”

The mind stands the test of time as being one of, if not the most important tool for anyone who sets out to test limits and become a true champion. The same way muscles need exercise, the mind needs practice to become stronger, clearer, and more ambitious. Here is a “homework” tip that might be the start of many positive habits you can start implementing in your daily routine:

Meditation is a powerful tool that can help us reduce stress, improve focus, increase self-awareness, and promote overall mental and emotional well-being. By practicing meditation regularly, we can create a sense of calm along with stability, clarity and strength in our minds that can help us better navigate life's challenges on and off the field.

But how do we get started with meditation? It can feel overwhelming to begin a new practice, or simply uncomfortable to try something new on our own. With a little guidance and persistence, anyone can learn to meditate and I want to make your experience a great one. Here are some tips to help you establish a powerful daily meditation practice:

  1. Set aside a specific time and place for meditation each day. This can help you make meditation a habit and ensure that you prioritize this time for yourself.

  2. Start with short sessions. Research show even just 3-10 minutes a day can make a difference. As you become more comfortable with meditation, you can gradually increase the length of your sessions.

  3. Focus on your breath. One of the simplest and most effective ways to meditate is to create the focus around your breath. Simply close your eyes and pay attention to the sensation of your breath as it enters and leaves your body. Gradually explore practicing meditation with your eyes open with soft gaze down or in front of you.

  4. Don't worry about "doing it right." Meditation is a personal practice, and there's no right or wrong way to do it. The goal is simply to quiet your mind and focus your attention. (I’ll save you the time and frustration and let you know right now that your brain is made to secrete 70,000 thoughts per day. Thoughts will come up and it’s ok to acknowledge those thoughts and replace your attention back on your breath!)

In my program, Flex Your Mind, I’ll teach you powerful techniques for finding clarity and guide you through meditations that bring you closer to a routine that keeps your mind clear and your spirit elevated. This program is designed to help individuals develop a daily meditation practice and learn techniques to promote mental clarity, emotional stability, and personal growth that results in mental strength.

Through a combination of guided meditations, journaling exercises, and coaching sessions, Flex Your Mind can help you develop a deeper understanding of yourself and cultivate a greater sense of calm and clarity in your mind. With a little practice and persistence, you can reap the benefits of this powerful tool and improve your overall mental and emotional well-being.

See you there!
