Play Present: One Moment at a Time

Every athlete knows the feeling. You miss a shot, drop a pass, or give up a big play, and suddenly your mind is stuck replaying it. Or you're up late in the game and your brain jumps ahead to the final whistle, the stat sheet, and who's watching from the stands.

Either way, your body is in the game while your mind is somewhere else.

Playing present means keeping your mind where your body is. It's a skill, and like any skill, it grows stronger with reps.

Rewind, Fast-Forward, Play

Think of your attention like a remote control with three buttons.

Rewind is your mind replaying the past: the last mistake, a missed call, something a coach said on the sideline. It sounds like, "Why did I do that?"

Fast-Forward is your mind jumping ahead: the score, rankings, college coaches, what could go wrong next. It sounds like, "What if I mess this up?"

Play is what's in front of you right now: this rep, this breath, this moment. It sounds like, "Next pitch." "Feet set." "Smooth swing."

Every athlete presses rewind and fast-forward. That's part of being human. The skill is noticing when it happens and pressing play again. Each time you bring your attention back, you've just trained your mental game.

Why the Present Moment Matters

Your body can only perform in the moment it's in. The swing, the throw, the takedown, and the jump shot all happen right now. When your attention is split between what already happened and what might happen, there's less of it available for the task in front of you.

Much of the pressure athletes feel lives in the past and the future. When you bring your focus back to the present, that pressure has less to hold on to, and your training has room to show up.

Use the Pauses in Your Sport

Every sport has built-in pauses, and those pauses are your chance to press play.

  • Football: Use the huddle between snaps to reset. One play at a time, with full energy and effort.

  • Golf: Your pre-shot routine is your reset. Let the last hole stay on the last green.

  • Softball and baseball: Step out between pitches, take a breath, and step back in ready for the next one.

  • Basketball: Next possession. On the free throw line, let your routine carry you.

  • Wrestling: Walking back to center is your reset. Breathe, set your stance, and meet the next position.

Find Your Anchor

An anchor is something you can feel right now that pulls your attention back to the present.

Breath: Take one slow breath and let the exhale be longer than the inhale. A slow exhale helps settle your body so you can focus on the task in front of you.

Body: Feel your feet on the ground or your grip on the bat, club, or ball. Your body is always in the present moment.

Eyes: Lock onto one small target, like the seams of the ball, the front of the rim, or a spot on the green.

Pair your anchor with a short cue word, like "Next," "Here," or "Smooth," and you've built your own reset.

When You Drift, Use BLR

When a mistake pulls you into rewind or pressure pulls you into fast-forward, bring yourself back with BLR:

  • Breathe: One slow breath to settle.

  • Learn: One quick takeaway. Save the full review for your post-game journal.

  • Refocus: Say your cue word and step into the next moment.

Train It Off the Field

Staying present in competition starts with practicing it everywhere else. Try a daily Mental Minute: sit somewhere quiet for two minutes, in silence, and notice your breath. When your mind wanders to school, practice, or tomorrow's game, gently bring it back. Your mind will wander, and that's the point. Each return is a rep.

After games, use your journal to reflect with WBH: what went well, what could be better, and how you'll get there. Reflection belongs after the game. Once it's written down, you can let it go and move toward what's next.

Keep Pressing Play

Some days staying present will feel easy, and some days your mind will wander a lot. Both are part of the process. Keep noticing, keep coming back, and keep building.

Next play. Next shot. Next rep.
